Answers

No one can tell you if you need counselling, Therapy or Treatment but if you have asked the question the chances are you do. Don't be afraid to talk to a counsellor, they see people every day with similar problems as yours.

It is a good idea to seek Counselling, Therapy or Treatment if you feel you can't manage your problem alone or if you feel that the problem is getting worse, adversely affecting your health and life causing distress to yourself or loved ones.

Yes, many problems can be helped by counselling, Therapy or Treatment. It is common for people to feel hopeless before they start receiving counselling, but you will be helped to understand yourself better, weed out old habits and to gain more control of your life.

Friends can be a source of comfort when needed but Counsellors are trained and qualified to help people to get to the root of their problems, friends don't have that training and being so close to you it is hard for them to be objective. It is often hard for a friend to cope with your problem and to know how to respond. A Counsellor is skilled at finding the cause of your problem and helping you to recognise your true feelings.

Approaching a Counsellor will only help you not the other person. It can however help you to respond to others in a different way and so effect the way they approach you. There are occasions when a couple will be seen together or another family member may be encouraged to attend.

Counselling is not something that it done to you or for you, it is a journey that you and your Counsellor take together. it involves trust and honesty from both of you, so you can feel secure enough to tell your counsellor anything.

You will be able to understand yourself better and, once you have discovered what the root cause of your problem is, to change that by looking at your thoughts and motives clearly and to ascertain what is important to you.

Questions is one of the tools your counsellor will use to help you to explore your thoughts and feelings. There are no correct or incorrect answers, the questions are chosen to help you come to the right conclusion yourself.

That depends on the nature of your problem and often how long you have been living with it. Some have deep seated problems that can't be put right over night and may take months to overcome, others may find just talking to a Counsellor alleviates the stress and the way forward seems clear quite quickly.

The decision that you no longer need counselling will be yours. You and your counsellor will work out a program that will wean you off the sessions over a period of time, this helps avoid any relapse in the future and helps you to confidently make decisions with a calm and quiet heart.
